Purpose & context About the Conclave
Constitution Day of India marks the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1949 on November 26. It reminds us of the values set out in the Preamble - Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Which is the root of the Indian constitution and guides the vision of the nation.
When the idea of ‘Justice’ is discussed in the context of Dalits, the ‘justice’ itself is prejudiced by perceived differences as it is often narrowly understood and limited to addressing cases of atrocities and untouchability. While these are critical concerns, such a limited view reduces the broader meaning of justice envisioned in the Constitution. The Preamble of Indian Constitution offers a more expansive understanding for Justice, it includes Social Justice, Economic Justice and Political Justice. It emphasizes Justice is only about the end result of responding to discrimination, violence or inequality but also about preventing such injustices and ensuring dignity, equality, and fair opportunities in all spheres of life. While discussing the rights of Dalit communities, this broader understanding is essential to move beyond the ‘reactive justice’ towards a more inclusive and transformative approach especially looking at Social, Economic and Political Justice.
At the same time, new and emerging challenges are also shaping how justice is experienced today. Issues such as Climate change, AI driven technology, Social Media Boom, mental health growing role of business in society are adding new dimensions to the conversation on justice
As we are celebrating 77th Constitution Day on 26th of November, 2026. It is crucial to understand and look into the four values mentioned in the preamble- Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity not theoretically but how it is experienced in the realities from the perspectives of Dalits. In this context, it becomes important to ask and reflect: Are the values of the Preamble being realised equally for all? What are the gaps between constitutional promises and lived realities? How can we collectively move towards a more just and inclusive society?
The ‘Justice Conclave 2026’ organised by National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights for two days in New Delhi. It is the dialogue platform to discuss the Dalit concerns under the respective Values. The conclave aims to bring together voices from the Dalit Human Rights Defenders, Experts, Social Activists, survivors of caste atrocities, Academicians, Grassroot and Women and Youth leaders, members from Civil Society Organizations, Fraternities from Art and Cultural space and Social Media Influencers.
By bringing together diverse perspectives and experiences, the conclave aims not only to reflect on current realities but also to reimagine pathways for realising Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity for all through carefully designed thematic discussions.
